The printer driver can be installed using the CD-ROM accompanying the machine, or downloaded from the Canon website.
This section describes how to install a Mac PS driver using the Installer.

Using the CD-ROM, follow the instructions on the screen for a smooth installation process.

After installing the printer driver, add your printer from System Preferences of your Mac OS.

Adding a Printer from the System Preferences

  • The procedures and appearance of screenshots may vary, depending on the version of the printer driver and the CD-ROM that you are using.
  • Even if you are using Windows, you can install the printer driver using the CD-ROM accompanying the machine, or by downloading the driver from the Canon website. For Windows installation procedures, see "Installation (Windows)."

Installing the Printer Driver


  1. Insert the CD-ROM into your computer.

The CD-ROM icon is displayed on the desktop.


  1. Double-click the CD-ROM icon → open the following folders: [PS] - [us_eng].

  1. Double-click the [PS Installer] icon.

The [Authenticate] dialog box is displayed.


  1. Enter the administrators name and password → click [OK].

The installer starts.

  • Depending on the system environment, the [Authenticate] dialog box may not be displayed. In that case, skip to step 6

  1. Click [Continue].


  1. Read the software license agreement carefully → click [Continue].


  1. If you agree to the terms of the software license agreement, click [Agree].


  1. Confirm the install location → click [Install].

Installation starts.


  1. Click [Close] when the confirmation message below appears.

Installation is complete.

  • The printer utility software "PS Printmonitor" is installed simultaneously.
  • For details about using PS Printmonitor, see the Online Help.

Adding a Printer from the System Preferences


  1. Open [System Preferences] → click [Print & Fax].

The [Print & Fax] dialog box is displayed.


  1. Click the [+] icon.

If you are using Mac OS X 10.4.x, click [Print] in the [Print & Fax] dialog box to display the [Print] pane → click the [+] icon.

The printer registration dialog box is displayed.


  1. Select [IP] or [IP Printer] → select [Line Printer Daemon - LPD] or [HP Jetdirect - Socket] ([HP Jet Direct - Socket]) from [Protocol].

If the printer you are going to use is connected using IPv6, click [More Printers] → select [Canon IPv6 (CUPS PS v3)]. For details about which printer models support IPv6, see the Printer Driver Installation Guide.

  • [IPP (Internet Printing Protocol)] is not supported.

  1. Enter the IP address of the printer you are going to use in [Address] → select [Select a driver to use] from [Print Using].

If you are using Mac OS X 10.4.x, enter the IP address of the printer you are going to use → select [Canon] from [Print Using].

If the printer you are going to use is connected using IPv6, enter a link-local unicast address or global unicast address for [Address]. When entering a link-local unicast address, select an interface from [Network Interface].

  • If you are using a printer that is connected using IPv6, you can enter an abbreviated notation unicast address. Also, when entering a global unicast address, you can set a DNS name. This option is only available if a DNS server that supports IPv6 has been specified beforehand in the network settings for the computer you are using.

  1. Select the printer driver corresponding to the printer you are going to use from the list.

If you are using Mac OS X 10.6.x, enter the IP address for the printer you are using in [Address], and select [Print Using].

  • For the printer driver name corresponding to your printer, see the Printer Driver Installation Guide.

  1. Click [Add].

If you are using an IPv4 connection, when you click [Add], the dialog boxes for installable options and communication settings are displayed. Confirm or configure the options and communication settings to be used with the printer you are going to use → click [Continue] → proceed to step 7.

If you are connected using IPv4 with bi-directional printing, since the option settings are automatically updated after the printer has been added, you can click [Continue] without setting the options.


  1. Confirm that the printer has been added in the [Print & Fax] dialog box → close the [Print & Fax] dialog box.

  • After adding the printer to the system preferences, specify the option settings. For more information, see the Printer Driver Installation Guide.
  • Confirm that the driver name corresponding to your printer is displayed beside [Kind] on the right-hand side of the [Print & Fax] dialog box.

  • USB Connection

If the printer you are using is connected to the computer via a USB port, perform the following procedures to add the printer:

(1) Open [System Preferences] → click [Print & Fax].
(2) Turn the printer on → connect the printer to a computer with a USB cable.
(3) On the [Print & Fax] dialog box, click the [+] icon.
(4) On the printer registration dialog box, select [Default] or [Default Browser].
(5) Select the printer you are going to use.
  • Select a printer that has [USB] displayed in the [Kind] or [Connection] column.

(6) From the [Print Using] drop-down list, select [Select a driver to use] → select the printer driver corresponding to the printer you are going to use from the list.
  • If you are using Mac OS X 10.4.x, select [Canon] from [Print Using] → select the printer driver corresponding to the printer model you are going to use.
  • If you are using Mac OS X 10.6.x, select the printer driver corresponding to the printer you are going to use from the list.

(7) Click [Add].
(8) When the dialog box for installable options is displayed, specify the settings for the options installed in the printer you are using.
(9) Confirm that the printer has been added in the [Printing] pane of the [Print & Fax] dialog box → close the [Print & Fax] dialog box.
