Canon PS3 Printer PPD File for macOS
This guide explains the installation and setup procedures of the interim PostScript printer driver for Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.
NOTE:
This guide covers Native (Cocoa/Carbon) printing on Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.
Read this guide carefully before installing and using the printer driver.

Installing PostScript Printer Description (PPD) Files
<Destination Folder for Installation>
Mac OS X 10.5 or later:
Startup disc/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/
Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4:
Startup disc/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj
NOTE:
When installing, you may need enter an administrator's name and password.
Use the following procedure to install the PPD files.
Installing PPD files
1.
Open the [PS_PPD] folder.
NOTE:
If you have downloaded the driver from the Canon web site, part of the folder structure may differ.
2.
Copy the [CNxxxxX1.PPD.gz] PPD file corresponding to the printer you are using to the following folder.
For Mac OS X 10.5 or later:
/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/
For Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4:
/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj
NOTE:
If an authentication warning is displayed, perform the authentication procedure.
Installation is complete.
Setting Up a PostScript Printer
You can set up your interim PostScript printer driver as an AppleTalk printer, an LPR printer that uses an IP address, or USB connected printer on Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.
Refer to the macOS help and consult your network administrator to select either way.
NOTE:
Network options should be properly configured on Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later and your printer in advance.
Use the following procedure to set up the printer.
NOTE:
For Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4, use [Printer Setup Utility] to add or delete the default printer. For Mac OS X 10.5 or later, add and delete printers from [Print & Fax], [Print & Scan], or [Printers & Scanners] in [System Preferences].
If you use a printer with a USB connection in Mac OS X 10.3.9, you may not be able to add the printer.
If this happens, add the printer using another connection method.
For an AppleTalk connection
1.
Double-click [Printer Setup Utility] in the [Utilities] folder of the [Applications] folder in the Startup disk.
[Printer Setup Utility] launches.
2.
Click [Add] in the [Printer List] window. For Mac OS X 10.4, click [More Printers] in the [Printer Browser] dialog box.
NOTE:
A different dialog box appears when no printer is set up. Click [Add] in the dialog box and proceed to step 3.
3.
Click the pop-up menu at the top of the [Printer List] window and select [AppleTalk].
4.
Select the printer that you use. If there are AppleTalk Zones, select the correct zone, and then select your printer.
NOTE:
Select a printer that has [PostScript Printer] displayed in its [Type] column.
5.
Select [Canon] from the [Print Using] or [Printer Model] pop-up menu.
NOTE:
If you want to choose a PPD stored in a desired location, select [Other], then choose the PPD for the printer you are using and click [Add].
6.
Select the PPD files of your printer driver from the [Model Name] list.
NOTE:
-The name of the PPD files corresponds to the name of the product that you are using.
-Depending on your printer, you may also be able to select [Auto Select] instead of selecting the PPD files.
7.
Click [Add].
8.
Confirm that the printer has been added in the [Printer List] window and close the window to exit [Printer Setup Utility].
For an IP connection
1.
Double-click [Printer Setup Utility] in the [Utilities] folder of the [Applications] folder in the Startup disk.
[Printer Setup Utility] launches.
2.
Click [Add] in the [Printer List] window.
NOTE:
A different dialog box appears when no printer is set up. Click [Add] in the dialog box and proceed to step 3.
3.
Select the connection method for the printer.
For Mac OS X 10.4:
Click [IP Printer] at the top left of the [Printer Browser] dialog box, and select [Line Printer Daemon - LPD] from [Protocol].
For Mac OS X 10.3.9:
Click the pop-up menu at the top of the [Printer List] window, select [IP Printing], and select [LPD/LPR] for [Printer Type].
4.
Enter the IP address or DNS name of the printer for [Address] or [Printer's Address], and then enter a name in [Queue] or [Queue Name].
NOTE:
Note that you cannot use the same queue name for more than one printer.
5.
Select [Canon] from the [Print Using] or [Printer Model] pop-up menu.
NOTE:
If you want to choose a PPD stored in a desired location, select [Other], then choose the PPD for the printer you are using and click [Add].
6.
Select the PPD files of your printer driver from the [Model Name] list.
NOTE:
The name of the PPD files corresponds to the name of the product that you are using.
7.
Click [Add].
8.
Confirm that the printer has been added in the [Printer List] window and close the window to exit [Printer Setup Utility].
For an USB connection
1.
Double-click [Printer Setup Utility] in the [Utilities] folder of the [Applications] folder in the Startup disk.
[Printer Setup Utility] launches.
2.
Click [Add] in the [Printer List] window.
NOTE:
A different dialog box appears when no printer is set up. Click [Add] in the dialog box and proceed to step 3.
3.
Select the connection method for the printer.
For Mac OS X 10.4:
Click [Default Browser] at the top left of the [Printer Browser] dialog box.
For Mac OS X 10.3.9:
Click the pop-up menu at the top of the [Printer List] window, and select [USB].
4.
Select the printer that you use.
For Mac OS X 10.4:
Select a printer that has [USB] displayed in its [Connection] column.
For Mac OS X 10.3.9:
Select a printer that has [PostScript Printer] displayed in its [Type] column.
5.
Select [Canon] from the [Print Using] or [Printer Model] pop-up menu.
NOTE:
If you want to choose a PPD stored in a desired location, select [Other], then choose the PPD for the printer you are using and click [Add].
6.
Select the PPD files of your printer driver from the [Model Name] list.
NOTE:
The name of the PPD files corresponds to the name of the product that you are using.
7.
Click [Add].
8.
Confirm that the printer has been added in the [Printer List] window and close the window to exit [Printer Setup Utility].
1.
Open [System Preferences] and click [Print & Fax], [Print & Scan], or [Printers & Scanners].
2.
Click [+].
If you are using Mac OS X 10.7 or later, and there are shared printers on the network, select [Add Other Printer or Scanner] from the drop-down list that is displayed when you click [+].
3.
Select the printer connection method.
For an AppleTalk connection (Mac OS X 10.5):
Select [AppleTalk].
For an IP connection:
Select [IP].
For a USB connection:
Select [Default].
4.
Specify the printer you are going to use.
For an AppleTalk connection (Mac OS X 10.5):
Select the printer you are going to use. If there is an AppleTalk zone, select the zone that the printer is connected to from the list on the left side. Select the printer you are going to use from the list on the right side, which displays the printers belonging to that zone.
For an IP connection:
Select [Line Printer Daemon - LPD] from [Protocol], and enter the printer's IP address or DNS name. Enter the print connection name in [Queue] or [Queue Name].
NOTE:
Enter the correct product name of the printer you are using for the print connection name.
For a USB connection:
Select a printer that has [USB] displayed in the [Kind] column.
5.
Select [Select a driver to use]/[Select Printer Software]/[Select Software] from the [Print Using]/[Use] pop-up menu.
NOTE:
If you want to choose a PPD stored in a desired location, select [Other], then choose the PPD for the printer you are using and click [Add].
6.
From the driver name list, select the driver name ([Canon xxxx PPD]) that corresponds to the printer you are going to use, and click [Add].
If you are using Mac OS X 10.6 or later, select the driver in the [Printer Software] dialog box, and then click [OK].
NOTE:
-Read the printer model name for "xxxx" in the printer driver name.
-If you cannot find the printer driver name, Enter [Canon] in the search column and execute a search.
-For an AppleTalk connection, depending on the printer you are going to use, you can select [Auto Select] instead of selecting the PPD file.
7.
Check that the printer has been added in the [Print & Fax], [Print & Scan], or [Printers & Scanners] pane, and close [System Preferences].
After setting up the printer, select the printer you want to use in the [Print] dialog box. To select a printer, follow the procedure below.
1.
Launch any application that can print files (e.g. TextEdit).
2.
Select [Page Setup] from the [File] menu.
3.
In the [Page Setup] dialog box, select the printer added in step 4 from the [Format for] pop-up menu and confirm that the product name that you are using is displayed between [Format for] and [Paper Size].
IMPORTANT:
If a different product name or [Generic] is displayed, the PPD file is not properly specified. Proceed on to the following steps to complete the procedure.
To re-register a printer, follow the procedure below.
Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4
1.
Double-click [Printer Setup Utility] in the [Utilities] folder of the [Applications] folder in the Startup disk.
[Printer Setup Utility] launches.
2.
In the [Printer List] window, select the printer and click [Delete].
3.
Close the [Printer List] window.
4.
Repeat from step 1 of "Setting Up a PostScript Printer".
Mac OS X 10.5 or later
1.
Open [System Preferences] and click [Print & Fax], [Print & Scan], or [Printers & Scanners].
The [Print & Fax], [Print & Scan], or [Printers & Scanners] pane is displayed.
2.
Select the printer you want to delete from the [Print & Fax], [Print & Scan], or [Printers & Scanners] pane, and click [-].
3.
Repeat from step 1 of "Setting Up a PostScript Printer".
You can utilize the various features of the printer you are using, such as selecting paper types, setting the finishing method, and setting the print quality.
Setting printer features
1.
Open an application, and select [Print] from the [File] menu.
2.
Click the [Printer] pop-up menu, and select the printer you are using.
3.
Select [Printer Features] from the lower pop-up menu.
4.
Select the feature you want to set from the [Feature Set] pop-up menu, and set the displayed items.
NOTE:
-Features that require particular installable options are also displayed. Check that the required option or combination of options is actually installed in the printer.
-If you attempt to print with a combination of settings that cannot be used together (e.g. [Staple] and [Rotate]), printing cannot be executed correctly. Refer to "Before using the interim PostScript printer driver."
5.
When you have finished setting the features, click [Print] to begin printing.
Cautions, Limitations and Restrictions
Depending on the operating system and application you are using, when you print using a custom paper size, you may not be able to set the paper size or use the paper size you have set. If this happens, adjust the paper size slightly.
All the available features of the printer you are using are displayed in the [Printer Features] pop-up menu of the [Print] dialog box. Among these features are those that are only available when the appropriate options have been installed and/or the appropriate print settings have been specified. Be sure to select only those features that are applicable to the printer you are using. Be sure to not select a combination of printer features that conflict, as this will lead to printing problems.
When printing on non-standard sized paper, printing may not be able to be performed correctly if you specify a paper size that is not supported by the device.
Sometimes a combination of printer features is required for printing. If the combined settings are insufficient, this may lead to problems such as paper jamming etc. In particular, when setting the features relating to paper supply and output, it is strongly recommended that you refer to the combinations of available features in the manual for the printer you are using beforehand.
If you are using Mac OS X 10.3.9, after repeated printings from the same application, some of the characters in the [Print] dialog box may no longer be displayed. If this occurs, quit the application and open it again to solve the problem.
If the display of item names selected from the [Printer Features] pop-up menu are shortened to "..." and you cannot confirm the item names, you can display the name of an item by clicking on an item.
When printing, you can also select displayed print output options that are not installed in your printer. Confirm what print output options are installed in your printer and be sure to select the correct print output options when printing.
The Finishing settings in the [Printer Features] pop-up menu apply regardless of the [Collated] settings in the [Copies & Pages] pop-up menu.
If you are using the imageRUNNER C3020 Series or C3025 Series, you cannot set the Inner Finisher-K1.
Page sizes displayed in the [Page Setup] dialog box vary according to the macOS version you are using.
You can use resident printer fonts only from applications such as Adobe Illustrator 10 or Adobe InDesign. (As of June 2002)
Performing two-sided printing of a document with an odd number of pages may add a blank page at the end of the print job. In this case, the extra blank page is added to the total page count for the document.
If you are using Mac OS X 10.6, when you select [2] or more for [Pages per Sheet] in the [Layout] preferences pane, and select [Flip horizontally], the print result may be off center.
Be sure to set correct finishing and content page sizes, referring to the documentation provided with the printer. If you set an incorrect size, the print job will be cancelled. In addition, the paper type for content pages is plain paper, regardless of the paper type selected under [Paper Type].
To use the [Use Secure Watermark Function of Device]/[Use Secure Printing Function of Device] feature, install the option(s) that support the Secure Watermark function/Secure Printing Function in the printer beforehand, then activate the Secure Watermark function/Secure Printing Function from the printer driver.
If you are using an application that is capable of setting colors in a document, in order to use the [Grayscale Conversion]/[Device Link Profile] feature you must set the color mode of the document to RGB or CMYK and set the color profile of the document to a RGB-based or CMYK-based profile in the application.
If you are using the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C250/350/351, imageRUNNER C1225/1325/1335, or MF810C/820C, paper supply from [Drawer 1 (Envelope)] is not guaranteed if you are printing on an Envelope C5, therefore it is recommended that you supply the envelope from another paper source.
If you are using a device that supports [Eco (Staple-Free)] with Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier, you cannot use the [Staple/Eco (Staple-Free)] function.
If an authentication function such as department ID management or user authentication is set, you may not be able to print.
The paper output destination selected in the driver may differ from the destination that the device outputs to, depending on your environment.
